HelpMum Africa is set to host the second edition of its CareCode Hackathon, inviting innovators, developers, and problem-solvers to create impactful solutions for maternal and infant healthcare in Nigeria.
This initiative is designed to bring together bold thinkers ready to tackle real-life challenges affecting Nigerian mothers and newborns across areas such as maternal care, newborn health, nutrition, and beyond.
About the Hackathon
At HelpMum Africa, innovation is seen as a powerful driver of transformation in healthcare. The CareCode Hackathon provides a platform for participants to develop practical, scalable solutions that can improve health outcomes and save lives.
The programme is open to members of the tech community, including researchers, innovators, entrepreneurs, and recent graduates with strong skills in software development and Artificial Intelligence.
Prize Pool
Participants will compete for a total prize fund of ₦10,000,000:
- 1st Place: ₦5,000,000
- 2nd Place: ₦3,000,000
- 3rd Place: ₦2,000,000
Eligibility Criteria
To participate, applicants must:
- Be between 18 and 35 years old
- Be resident in Nigeria (final demos will take place in Lagos)
- Have skills in software development and/or Artificial Intelligence
- Possess a registered business with a clear path to sustainability
- Be able to integrate HelpMum’s open-source innovations into their solution
- Apply as an individual or as part of a team (maximum of 3 members)
- Be open to participants of all genders
Participation Process
The hackathon will follow a structured three-stage process:
- Step 1: Pitch Application Submit your idea, clearly explaining your innovative solution and its potential impact.
- Step 2: Development Stage Selected participants will build their solutions with guidance and mentorship from industry experts.
- Step 3: Grand Finale Finalists will present their solutions in Lagos during the SmartVerge event for a chance to win and gain further support.
Key Guidelines
- Participants must have a registered business and a sustainability plan beyond the hackathon
- Solutions must integrate HelpMum’s open-source innovations
- Projects should be low-cost and easy to implement
- Participants must be available for physical demos in Lagos
- All participants must agree to the hackathon’s terms and conditions
- Winners will engage with HelpMum post-hackathon to support scaling and implementation
Winning Criteria
Submissions will be evaluated based on:
- Strength and feasibility of the proof of concept
- Presence of a functional Minimum Viable Product (MVP)
- Integration of HelpMum’s open-source tools
- Cost-effectiveness and scalability of the solution
- Creativity, originality, and innovation
- Clean, user-friendly interface (no poorly structured AI-generated designs)
